This presentation summarizes the current evidence supporting 'optimal' protein recommendations for weight loss and weight maintenance. In addition, we will explore the science behind protein's impact on appetite control and satiety as a lever to promote weight loss and weight maintenance. We will discuss key factors that influence protein's effects. These include things like protein quantity (per meal), quality (plant vs. animal proteins), distribution (even vs. skewed), and timing of consumption (breakfast). Lastly, we will translate the evidence into practical guidance on 'best practices' for incorporating increased dietary protein within a healthy dietary pattern.
Heather J. Leidy, PhD is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Texas at Austin. She has a joint appointment in the Department of Nutritional Sciences and the Department of Pediatrics-Dell Medical School. She previously served on the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee and was the American Society of Nutrition Research Interest Group Director. Dr. Leidy received her BS in Biology from Shippensburg University and went on to complete her MS and PhD in Physiology at Penn State University as well as a Post-doctoral fellowship in the Department of Nutrition Science and Ingestive Behavior at Purdue University. Dr. Leidy’s research examines the effects of increased dietary protein, protein quality, and timing of consumption on the signals that promote satiety, healthy eating behavior, glycemic control, and weight management with specific focus on adolescence. She has been continuously funded by external grants, including NIH, over the past 17 years, has given 130 invited research talks and has 90+ publications, including 10 reviews in this area.
