Dr. Flavio Vieira is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Alberta in the Departments of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Sciences and Pediatrics and is a recipient of prestigious Postdoctoral Fellowships from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Alberta Innovates, and the Women and Children's Health Research Institute. Dr. Vieira completed his BSc, MSc, and PhD in Human Nutrition in Brazil, his home country, with visiting periods at the University of Alberta and the University of Porto, Portugal. Dr. Vieira holds Postgraduate diplomas in Clinical Nutrition (Residency Program) and Epidemiology, and is a Registered Dietitian Specialized in Nutrition Therapy from Brazil. Dr. Vieira's primary research interests are obesity and obesity-related conditions, focusing on prevention and improved care throughout the lifespan, encompassing all aspects of obesity management, including nutrition, exercise, behavioural changes, pharmacology, and metabolic bariatric surgery. Dr. Vieira is particularly interested in assessing body composition, energy metabolism, and nutrition-related conditions, such as sarcopenic obesity and malnutrition. He understands the complexity of obesity as a chronic disease and strives to move towards a patient-centred, individualized, holistic, and multidisciplinary approach while combating weight bias and stigma.
